Tips: 20 resolutions for more climate protection With these simple tips you can protect the climate
January 01, 2026
1. Heat sparingly
Do not heat your rooms too much and make sure that they are well insulated. Regular shock ventilation provides the necessary fresh air without cooling down the apartment. In this way, a lot of heat is stored in the walls, which means that the fresh air quickly returns to "room temperature".
2. Use efficient appliances
Are you planning to buy a new electrical appliance soon? When buying a new appliance, it pays to take an energy-efficient product. Good appliances can be recognised by the energy label: A+++.
3. Use your appliances efficiently
The Eco programme for washing machines and dishwashers not only saves energy and water, but also protects laundry and dishes. And when fully loaded, switching them on pays off even more.
4. Cook energy-efficiently
Prepare dishes in a pan rather than in an oven. Use a lid when cooking something in pots and heat water in a kettle.
5. Use LEDs
When it comes to light sources, use LEDs. They use 80 to 90% less energy than the old light bulbs.
6. Goodbye standby
Switch off your electrical appliances properly instead of leaving them in standby mode. This is because electricity is consumed unnecessarily here. In a typical Austrian household, standby mode accounts for about five percent of electricity consumption.

Conscious consumption
7. Think about recycling
The WWF recommends: Reusable instead of disposable! Choose your own reusable drinking bottle more often instead of packaged drinks and reusable carrier bags instead of disposable bags. Recycle organic waste, aluminium cans, waste glass, plastics and waste paper, because if they are properly separated, they will continue to be valuable raw materials.
8. Obtain clean electricity
Green electricity comes 100% from renewable energy sources such as sun, wind, water or biomass and thus protects the climate. How clean is your electricity? You can find out here!
9. Check your savings Do you
know what happens to your savings in the bank? It all depends on how your bank invests it. It can be used to finance projects that harm the environment or invest your money in environmentally friendly projects. You can read what you can do here.
10. This year once less
Live according to the motto quality before quantity. With every purchase, ask yourself: Do I really need this? And prefer durable and repairable products.
11. Use your belongings for longer
Invest in durable products and consider whether repairs are possible before disposal and new purchases. This is because production, transport and disposal consume energy and produce greenhouse gases.

Sustainable mobility
12. Leave the car parked
more often Many car journeys are shorter than five kilometres. Especially here you can leave the car at home more often and instead travel by public transport, bicycle and even on foot. This protects our climate and is also healthy.
13. Take the train on holiday
Short-haul flights in particular are problematic from an environmental point of view. Compared to cars and planes, the train has a significantly better environmental balance. In addition, a train journey means less stress for our body than a flight.
14. Drive in an environmentally friendly way
If it cannot be avoided, then drive a car with the Eco-Drive driving technique. This allows you to save fuel and thus also CO2. The most important points about Eco-Drive technology: accelerate quickly, shift up early (at a maximum of 2500 rpm – and down late), drive with foresight and evenly – for example, take your foot off the accelerator early before a bend.

Sustainable nutrition
15. Back to the Sunday schnitzel
Eat less, but higher quality meat, for example a Sunday schnitzel only once a week. The WWF Food Guide shows you which foods are better for the environment, biodiversity and animal welfare.
16. Buy more organic Buying
organic doesn't necessarily have to be more expensive. You can read about how to do this in our shopping cart study.
17. Trust your senses:
Food does not automatically spoil with the expiration date. Smell or taste an expired product - our sense of taste is very well developed and recognizes discrepancies immediately. In this way, unnecessary food waste can be avoided.
18. Store food properly
Proper storage extends the shelf life of food many times over. The basic rule is: always stow new purchases at the back, store food leftovers airtight or put them in portions in the freezer.

Take action
19. Raise your voice
Use one of the many ways to raise your voice for our climate: Sign climate petitions, demonstrate for climate protection, get involved in municipal politics or in regional projects for climate protection.
20. Become a multiplier
Share your knowledge on climate protection with family, friends and acquaintances and infect them with your commitment. Every small step for climate protection is one in the right direction.
